Wash and Prep the Towel

Wash the flour sack towel before starting to remove factory residue, wrinkles, and possible shrinkage.

Dry the towel completely, then iron it flat using a medium-high cotton setting. A smooth surface helps the monogram apply evenly and gives your finished towel a cleaner professional look.

Choose Your Monogram Design

Pick the letter, initials, or design you want to feature on your towel.

Popular monogram ideas include:

  • Family initials
  • First name letters
  • Wedding or couple initials
  • Farmhouse-style script fonts
  • Simple modern block lettering

If you’re a beginner, start with larger and simpler designs since they are easier to align and apply.

Position the Design

Lay the towel flat on a clean table or ironing board.

Popular placement options:

  • Bottom corner for a modern farmhouse look
  • Centered for a classic kitchen towel style
  • Lower edge for decorative hanging towels

Apply the Monogram

Option A – Iron-On Vinyl (HTV)

Preheat your iron to the cotton setting (approximately 300–315°F / 150–157°C). Turn OFF the steam setting completely.

If using a heat press, set it to 305°F (152°C).

Place the vinyl design shiny side up on the towel and cover it with parchment paper or a Teflon sheet.

Press firmly:

  • Household Iron: Press each section for 15–20 seconds using firm pressure.
  • Heat Press: Press for 10–15 seconds with medium pressure.
  • Allow the vinyl to cool slightly, then gently peel away the backing sheet.
  • If any corners lift, cover the design again and press for another 5–8 seconds.

Fabric Paint

  • Place cardboard or thick paper inside the towel to prevent paint from bleeding through.
  • Secure the stencil using painter’s tape.
  • Using a sponge brush or stencil brush, dab the fabric paint gently onto the design. Avoid heavy brushing, which can cause paint to spread under the stencil.
  • Carefully remove the stencil while the paint is still slightly wet.

Allow the paint to air dry for 24 hours.

To heat set the design:

  • Place parchment paper over the painted area
  • Iron on medium heat (around 300°F / 150°C) for 3–5 minutes
  • Keep the iron moving continuously
  • Do not use steam

Cure and Finish

Follow the instructions provided with your vinyl or fabric paint brand for best results.

Typical curing times:

  • HTV Vinyl: Wait 24 hours before washing
  • Fabric Paint: Allow 24–72 hours before washing for maximum durability
  • Wash finished towels in cold water and tumble dry on low heat to help preserve the design.

Style Your Finished Towel

Fold your towel neatly and display it in your kitchen, coffee station, or dining area for a personalized farmhouse touch.

For gifting ideas:

  • Tie with baker’s twine or ribbon
  • Add a wooden tag or gift label
  • Pair with baking tools, candles, or homemade treats

These handmade towels are perfect for housewarming gifts, bridal showers, birthdays, and holiday baskets.
